What is a Save Our Date site?

It's the online home for information about your wedding. Let guests find out where things are happening, post their pictures or messages and find out about your wedding list.

Why do I need one?

Lots of couples want to send out information before their wedding, with details of where events are happening, maps, wedding list details and contact information. So why not simply put it all online?

Having a wedding website also lets you keep friends, family and guests up to date in the run-up to the big day – both with what you're doing and any changes to the plans.

How much does it cost?

There's a one-off charge of £120 for your site. This includes:

  • A site address of your choice – the system will generate you one in the format yournames.saveourdate.co.uk (but you can change the yournames bit);
  • The pick of our templates and colour schemes;
  • A front page, with spaces for pictures, a blog, venue and accommodation information, a gallery, wedding list info, a place for guests to leave messages and space for contact information;
  • The ability to manage your guest list online;
  • A budget tracker so you can keep control of costs;
  • Your own gift list, including items for any number of places.

I'm already a Save Our Seat customer. How do I get my discount?

E-mail us with your Save Our Seat username and your name and billing address and we'll send you a code to use when you pay.

How long will my site be up for?

Your site will be up and running for two years. We'll send you an e-mail a month before that year runs out offering you the chance to keep it going for another year, at the cost of £30.

If you don't wish to renew, please make sure you've downloaded anything you still need from your site by the renewal date – otherwise you won't be able to retrieve it. Your site's address will then become available for new users to register again.

A lot of people still don't have a computer. What will they do?

Not everyone has their own computer but pretty much everyone has access to a computer be it at work, or one that belongs to their child/niece/nephew/friend/neighbour/kindly relative who can show them your site or print the appropriate parts out for them. And, if they don't have any of the above, libraries have free internet access and friendly staff who are only too happy to help.

I am hopeless with computers. Will I be able to cope?

We know you don't believe us but it really is incredibly simple to use. We would say idiot-proof but we don't want to offend anyone. But it is (and our favourite idiot has tested it so we should know). Everything is explained in non-geeky words. And help is at hand in the unlikely event you need it.

But I don't want just anybody to be able to access my site! Can I password-protect it?

You can. Enter a password in the site control panel and visitors will be prompted for it when they visit. If they don't know it, they won't be able to see any of your site's content.

Why does my site look different on my iPhone/iPod/mobile phone browser?

Our system automatically detects users with these kinds of devices and sends them to a separate version of the site, designed specifically for smaller screens. It's a quicker download and allows them to access all the information they're likely to need more quickly. And, while it might look a bit different, the colour scheme will remain the same as the one on your main site.

If you're on a small-screen browser and need to edit your site, you can click on the "Show full site" link at the bottom of any page and use the full site instead.

My question isn't covered here! Can you help?

Probably, yes. Why not get in touch with us?

editing your site.

I don't like some of the text on my pages. Can I change it?

Editing text

Absolutely! Editing text on your site couldn't be simpler. Simply click on the text you want to change, and it'll be replaced by an edit box. Type in whatever you want instead. Once you're done, click the button in the bottom-right corner of your screen to save your changes.

I don't want to have a blog on my site. So why can't I remove it from my front page?

You only see the "Post to blog" link when you're logged in to your site. Other visitors won't see this – the blog will only appear if you decide to put something into it.

I've written a blog entry, but I don't want it to be visible yet. Can I turn it off?

You can! Click the tick/cross icon at the top-right corner of the blog entry and it will only be visible to people who are logged in to edit your site. Click it again, and it'll be visible to everyone!

Why can't I delete messages left by visitors?

For legal reasons, we need to be able to keep a note of every comment that's posted on our site. This includes ones you'd maybe rather weren't visible.

Don't worry, though; you can disable them so that visitors to your site won't see these messages. Just click on the little tick/cross icon at the top-right corner of any message and it will disappear.

How do guests add pictures to my site?

If you're happy for guests to be able to upload their own images, you'll find the setting on the "Main settings" page of your site control panel. Choose whether visitors can add pictures straight away, not at all or only after the wedding.

But I don't want that embarrassing picture from Magaluf to appear!

That's OK, you're still in control. Any pictures that are uploaded go into a "Awaiting approval" box. You can review them and, as long as you're happy, drag them into the main gallery. Save your changes and they'll appear for everyone to see. If you don't want a picture to feature on your site, simply drag it into the "To be deleted" box instead.

Can I reorder pictures in the gallery?

Absolutely. Just click and drag pictures into the order you want.

How do I edit a picture caption?

Click on the thumbnail of the picture you want to change, then click the link to add or view comments. You'll be able to click on the caption and edit it here.

How do I remove a message a guest left?

Messages will appear on your site as soon as people post them. You can remove a message by going to the messages page and clicking the little tick/cross icon at the right-hand side of the message. If you want to know straight away if someone has posted a message so you can see it then hit the RSS feed Êsymbol on the message page once your site has gone live.

maps.

How do the maps on the venues and accommodation pages work?

Tell us where your wedding's taking place and the venues will appear automatically on the map. Your site integrates automatically with Google Maps to do this.

How do I add a location?

Go to the appropriate page and choose the place you want to add from our list of venues or hotels.

But my location isn't listed!

Adding a location

No problem. We're adding more all the time, but you may prefer to do this yourself. At the top of the list of locations is a "Not on the list;" option. Choose this and you'll be able to enter the details of the venue or hotel yourself. When you click the "Add to list" button, it'll appear on your map automatically.

If you do this, you should double-check that Google puts the "pin" for your location in the right place. If it hasn't, fixing it is as simple as dragging the pin to the correct location.

I don't want to have to enter a whole list of hotels myself. Can't they just appear automatically?

They certainly can. On your site's "Accommodation" page, choose "Show Google hotel suggestions" and it will automatically find hotels in the appropriate area.

Can people get directions through my site?

Directions

Yes. Clicking on any marker gives visitors a number of options, including directions.

Choosing this will let them either click on another marker or enter an address – and their route will appear automatically on the map, with details below.

wedding lists.

Which wedding list services do you support?

Wedding lists

Pretty much all of them! We've built-in support for some of the most popular gift registries, including Amazon, Argos, Debenhams, House of Fraser, John Lewis, M&S, Next, notonthehighstreet.com, The Alternative Wedding List, The Green Gift List, The London Wedding List, The Scottish Wedding List, The Wedding Shop, Trailfinders and Wedding List Giving.

But even if your list isn't at one of the places we've mentioned, simply put in the details and your friends and family will be taken to it and told any codes they have to enter to access your gifts.

We were planning to list gifts from different stores. Can we do that?

A Save Our Date wedding list

Absolutely. If you've got lists established at a number of stores, simply keep adding lists to your site until you've included all of them. Alternatively, why not host your list here?

Find the products you want online – or simply mention something you'd really like to receive. Add it to your Save Our Date list and guests will be able to buy it and leave you a message. You can also require them to enter a password to make sure that malicious internet users don't pretend to have bought all of your gifts!

Our system automatically grabs the details from some of the most popular online stores for your Save Our Date list. If you're adding loads of products from a particular shop and it isn't quite getting all the details, please contact us and we'll make the process even quicker for you.

But I need a list of who's bought what. How can I get that?

We've made it really simple for you. Go into the "Gift list" section of your site control panel and you'll see who's bought what at any given moment. You can also view this list as a PDF – ideal for writing those thank-you cards.

guest list.

Can I keep track of my guests through the site?

Yes. Log in and go to your site control panel and choose the "Guest list" option. You'll see a form to add guests and a list of current ones underneath. You can easily change whether these guests are attending or not, or whether you haven't heard from them yet. You can also add extra details on any guest, allowing you to keep track of dietary requirements or travel details, for example.

But I need the list on paper!

You're in luck, then. Click on the "PDF" link and you'll be able to print out a PDF file containing all the details of who's attending and when – ideal for planning.

Can I accept RSVPs online?

Yes. You can set up a password through your site control panel. Guests can then go to a special site address – http://yournames.saveourseat.co.uk/rsvp/ – and enter details for everyone in their party. They can also provide details of dietary requirements, etc, in this way.ÊIf you do not wish to use the online RSVP facility then just leave the password blank and it will not be activated.

But I need the list on paper!

You're in luck, then. Click on the "PDF" link and you'll be able to print out a PDF file containing all the details of who's attending and when – ideal for planning.

budget tracker.

How do I keep track of my wedding budget?

Budget tracker

Simple. Our budget tracker does all the hard work for you. While it can't stop you overspending, it can tell you how you're doing. Log in, go to your site control panel and choose the "Budget tracker" option. You can them add items from a whole range of pre-defined categories, or add your own by choosing "Other". Enter the amount you've budgeted, what you actually spent, when it's due and whether it's paid. Once you're done, hit "Save changes". As you update the figures, the system will automatically calculate your totals, and whether you're over or under budget.

But I need the budget on paper!

Once again, you're in luck, then. Click on the "PDF" link and you'll be able to print out a PDF file containing all the details.
